This holiday season I’d like to shine light on one of my favorite humans in the world, my twin sister, Meg (pictured to the left of me). Not only is she equally as lovely as me, she’s smarter and harder working - I know what you’re all thinking, and yes, it’s possible. When I need anything checked for grammar, I send it to Meg. When I want to talk over a problem, I call Meg. And she sends me Zillow listings in Seattle, asks questions I can’t answer about their market, then complains about the price! We’re even.
This October, just after our 32nd birthday, I had the opportunity to travel with her on her first work trip abroad to London. It was sweet meeting her coworkers whom I know so much about, and a trip for them, realizing there is actually two of us. I’m instantly welcomed into the group, yet I can’t follow a single conversation as their work language is a series of acronyms.
She works for a company the whole world knows at this point, Amazon, and if you’ve heard anything about the corporate office, you know it’s hard to get in & even more challenging to get promoted. You’re ranked amongst your peers yearly, and need support from them to ‘level’ up. But it comes as no surprise to me that even Meg’s managers... manager jokes about her being CEO one day, because believe me, it’s going to happen. Her work ethic, knowledge of product, communication skills, and willingness to take on new challenging tasks... undeniable.
In a world full of instant gratification, shortcuts, impatience, and taking the easy way out, there are people like my sister, never afraid of a challenge. She is a testament to working hard, being undeniable in everything you do, and letting the path forward pave itself.
The work that goes unseen is the work that will set you apart. I’ve found this in my own career, and enjoy documenting it on occasion. We’ve all heard the simple saying, ‘it’s the little things’ and I believe in the little things. The little things add up and can exponentially improve your life, your career, your health, whatever it is your focusing on. Find your little things, work at them every day, and watch your life evolve. No magic or secret sauce, just effort.
Thank you for being a part of my world, be it big or small, I’m grateful for you.
